A great article from The Hill:
Santorum did not follow Sen. John McCain’s example in 2008 when a Republican called Obama an “Arab.” McCain responded that while he had policy differences with Obama he is a “decent, family man [and] citizen.”
The idea, mentioned in the article, that American politicians rely a lot on "codes" seems to be really true - and is certainly something to be sensitive about. It's not just what they say that matters - it's what they mean.
